Five PML-N lawmakers announced their resignations

FAISALABAD: Five PML-N lawmakers announced their resignations from public office during a Khatm-i-Nabuwwat conference organized by Pir Sialvi in Faisalabad on Sunday.

MNAs Dr Nisar Ahmad Jutt and Ghulam Bibi Bharwana, and Punjab MPAs Maulana Rehmatullah, Pir Hameeduddin Sialvi’s son Nizam-ud-Din Sialvi, and Khan Muhammad Baloch announced their resignations protesting government inaction against their demand for the resignation of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.

The lawmakers belong to Punjab’s Jhang, Chiniot, Faisalabad and Sargodha districts.

Pir Sialvi, who is also a former senator, earlier claimed at least 15 parliamentarians “spiritually associated” with the Sial Sharif shrine would tender their resignations at the public meeting in Faisalabad.

Earlier this week, the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had assured the Pir that he would visit him shortly and clarify the position and remarks of Rana Sanaullah.

7 students killed as train crushes rickshaw in Lodhran

A train crushed two motorised rickshaws on an ungated crossing, killing seven schoolchildren in Punjab’s Lodhran district, police said.

Police officer Javed Ahmed said the rickshaw drivers apparently misjudged the speed of the coming train due to heavy fog while attempting to cross the tracks early Friday morning near Lodhran.

The train was heading to Karachi from Lahore.

Ahmed said another five children aged 5 to 8 years and one rickshaw driver were critically injured.

Train accidents are common in Pakistan, which inherited thousands of kilometres of track and trains from former colonial power, Britain.

The railways have seen decades of decline due to corruption, mismanagement and lack of investment.

Robbery suspect ‘handed over to police’ killed in encounter

FAISALABAD: A man who was allegedly handed over to police by locals after a thwarted shop robbery bid, was later killed in an ‘encounter’ on Wednesday at Jaranwala.

According to Jaranwala Saddar police, two motorcyclists were looting people at gunpoint on Faisalabad Road when police confronted them.

Seeing police, the robbers opened fire which was returned. As a result, one of the robbers was hit by a bullet and died on the spot, while the other managed to escape.

Locals, however, refuted the police claim, saying two robbers occupying a car came to an auto shop near Saleemi Park, Lahore Road. They said the shop owner offered resistance and raised an alarm, alerting other shopkeepers who overpowered one of the robbers, while the other fled the scene.

The shopkeepers subjected the robber to torture before handing him over to city police. They said they also had a footage of the robber being taken away in a police van.

However, later Jaranwal Saddar police claimed to have killed the suspect, identified as Allah Ditta of Sargodha, in an encounter.
