The opposition parties alliance “INDIA” (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) has demanded appearance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in parliament over deadly ethnic violence and sexual assault in Manipur state. The opposition parties have been demanding that the Prime Minister should address parliament on the ethnic clashes. They have been protesting in and outside parliament since the monsoon session began last week. At least 130 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced in Manipur since May, after violence broke out between the majority Meitei group and the tribal Kuki minority. Ethnic violence has plunged the small Indian state of Manipur into what many have dubbed a state of civil war as the two largest groups, the majority Meitei and minority Kuki, battle over land and influence. At least 130 people have been killed and 400 wounded in violence that began in May. More than 60,000 have been forced from their homes as the army, paramilitary forces and police struggle to quell violence. Police armories have been looted, hundreds of churches and more than a dozen temples ruined, and villages destroyed. Last week, a video that showed two women being paraded naked by a mob sparked global outrage and condemnation. It also made Mr Modi break his silence on the issue: he said that the incident had \”shamed India\” and that the attackers wouldn’t be spared. The opposition coalition has filed a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led government in Lok Sabha amid the impasse over the Manipur issue¹. The ethnic clashes in Manipur have led to a logjam in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha since the monsoon session began on 20 July. The newly minted coalition, INDIA, has been contemplating a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led government. They are hoping that this would push the prime minister to make an appearance in Parliament and allow them to corner him over the issue of the ongoing Manipur crisis. The opposition parties have filed a no-trust motion in Lok Sabha against the Narendra Modi-led government, hoping it would corner PM Narendra Modi on the Manipur issue once he appears in Parliament.
