In a major step toward enhancing India’s indigenous defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated an upgrade of the Astra Mark-2 air-to-air missile, extending its range to over 200 kilometres.
The decision marks a significant leap in the Indian Navy’s long-range engagement potential, allowing naval aircraft to strike enemy targets from far greater distances with improved accuracy and electronic counter-measure resistance.
Developed entirely in India, the Astra missile series represents a key pillar of the country’s “Make in India” defense initiative. The extended-range variant, once operational, will bring the Indian Navy’s air combat capabilities closer to global standards, matching advanced systems deployed by leading military powers.
Defence officials note that integration trials and validation phases are already underway, signaling a major stride in India’s pursuit of self-reliant, next-generation warfare technology.
