Washington, D.C. – In a heartfelt move, Senator Muhammad Talha Mahmood met with Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist, currently imprisoned in a U.S. facility. During his visit, the Senator made a strong appeal to the U.S. authorities, urging for the immediate release of Dr. Siddiqui, describing her as “the daughter of the nation.”
Senator Mahmood, who has long been a vocal advocate for Dr. Siddiqui’s case, emphasized her wrongful imprisonment and the need for her repatriation to Pakistan. Speaking to the media after the meeting, he said, “Dr. Aafia Siddiqui has endured years of unjust incarceration. It is time for her to come home and reunite with her family.”
Dr. Siddiqui, who was convicted in 2010 on charges related to an alleged attempted attack on U.S. personnel in Afghanistan, has always maintained her innocence. Her case has drawn widespread international attention, with numerous human rights organizations calling for her release.
The meeting between Senator Mahmood and Dr. Siddiqui comes as part of ongoing efforts by Pakistani lawmakers to highlight her case and seek justice for her. The senator’s call for her immediate release is expected to gain significant attention in both the U.S. and Pakistan, where Dr. Siddiqui is considered a symbol of national pride.
As the campaign for her release continues, both Pakistani officials and citizens hope that Dr. Siddiqui’s plight will soon come to an end, and she will be able to return to her homeland.
