India has encountered its worst flooding of the century where the entire North Indian region has been affected by monsoon rains. According to BBC report, the main cause of flooding are unusual hydropower projects on Indian rivers and underdeveloped techniques of tunnelling. There are 118 hydropower projects in Hemachal Paradesh out of which 67 are in landslide zone. The sloganeering of shining India has been exposed by the floods where corruption in development sector has led to malpractices in construction work. The encroachment in river beds has led to deforestation, erosion and land sliding making Indian development sector taste its own medicine.
Environmentalists in India are protesting against the state for promoting non-scientific practices in developing tourism that is not sustainable and causing climate change.
