New Delhi is in the spotlight today as India hosts the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The two-day meeting, which started on Thursday (May 14) and will continue on Friday (May 15), is being held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital.
The high-level gathering is being chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and brings together foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS member countries and partner nations.
What is happening today?
As per the schedule released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the foreign ministers arrived at Bharat Mandapam at 10 AM. The First Session began at 10:30 AM. At 1 PM, all the visiting ministers will make a joint call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Seva Teerth. A Second Session is scheduled for 3:10 PM, followed by a formal dinner hosted by EAM Jaishankar at 7 PM. On Friday morning, a Third Session will be held at 10 AM to wrap up the meeting.
Why is this meeting important?
This meeting marks the first major ministerial-level engagement under India’s BRICS chairship for 2026 and is expected to play a significant role in shaping the agenda for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit to be held later this year.
The gathering marks the fourth time India hosts a BRICS summit-level engagement, underscoring New Delhi’s growing role within the bloc and among Global South nations.
Discussions during the two-day meeting will focus on major regional and global developments, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and reforming global governance institutions. The expanding bloc also faces divisions over the war in Iran, rising energy prices, and growing global economic uncertainty – all of which are expected to come up during talks.
India’s theme for BRICS 2026
India unveiled the official logo and dedicated website for its BRICS 2026 chairship under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Officials said the theme reflects India’s “Humanity First” and people-centric approach – an idea that Prime Minister Modi had strongly emphasised during the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
BRICS now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to the original members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
How to follow the meeting broadcast
The MEA has said that opening remarks from all sessions will be broadcast live on the MEA YouTube Channel and DD News. Photos from the meeting will be available on the MEA Flickr account, and select photos will also be shared through wire agencies.
