New Delhi: A 37-year-old man identified as Sarabjit Singh from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh breached a major security at the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday afternoon by forcefully entering the premises in a white Tata Sierra SUV through the VIP Gate No. 2, Police said.
“The incident occurred around 2:10 PM when Singh smashed through the boom barrier at Gate No. 2, which is reserved for VIPs, MLAs and senior officials. He drove the vehicle in a dangerous manner with apparent intent to run over security personnel on duty,” DCP North Raja Banthia said in a statement.
The Assembly is currently not in session. However, Speaker Vijender Gupta was present in his office on the premises at the time.
Singh proceeded to the porch area, where he alighted from the vehicle carrying a bouquet of red carnations and a garland of marigold flowers. He placed the bouquet of red flowers next to a vehicle used by Speaker Vijender Gupta before being challenged by security staff. Upon confrontation, he fled the spot in the same vehicle, Banthia said.
A few police personnel attempted to overpower him, but he managed to break free and drive away. The Assembly was not in session at the time, though Speaker Vijender Gupta was present in his office on the premises.
“Following the breach, a pan-Delhi hunt was launched, and Singh was arrested around 4:15 PM in the Roop Nagar area, a few kilometres away from the Delhi Assembly. The Tata Sierra SUV bears a Uttar Pradesh registration number UP26AZ8090,” Banthia stated.
