Iran reportedly launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward the joint U.S.–UK base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean last night. Both failed to achieve their objective — one did not complete its trajectory, while the other was intercepted by U.S. air defense systems.
Even though the strike was unsuccessful, the message is significant. Diego Garcia is thousands of kilometers away from Iran, and targeting it indicates a notable expansion in Iran’s missile reach.
This essentially means that the threat envelope is no longer regional. If such distances are now within range, it suggests that large parts of Europe could also fall within reach of similar systems — raising serious strategic concerns for Western defense planning.
