A moderate earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman Islands region early Sunday, according to preliminary data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
The tremor was recorded at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers, amplifying its intensity near the epicenter. Local residents in Port Blair and surrounding islands reported strong shaking but, so far, no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage have emerged.
Seismologists say the quake originated along the seismically active boundary between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, an area prone to frequent moderate-to-strong earthquakes.
