New Delhi, October 8, 2025:
French aerospace and defence major Safran Group has announced plans to double its workforce in India and significantly expand sourcing from Indian suppliers, strengthening the country’s position in the global aerospace and defence supply chain.
The company, which already employs several thousand people across multiple Indian facilities, aims to increase local production for both defence and dual-use (civil-military) applications. This move aligns closely with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which encourage domestic manufacturing and technology partnerships.
According to senior company officials, Safran’s expansion will focus on three major domains:
- Aerospace propulsion systems — including components for aircraft and helicopter engines.
- Avionics and electronics — where local suppliers will be integrated into Safran’s global supply network.
- Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) — supporting India’s growing commercial and defence aviation fleets.
“India has become one of our most strategic markets — not just for sales, but for engineering, manufacturing, and R&D,” a Safran spokesperson said. “We see strong opportunities to co-develop technologies with Indian partners, particularly in propulsion and onboard systems.”
Safran already collaborates with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and DRDO on engine technologies for advanced aircraft programs, including the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. Its new expansion plan is expected to further deepen industrial and research cooperation in these areas.
The French group’s increased investment comes amid broader efforts by India and France to enhance bilateral defence ties — following recent joint projects such as the Rafale fighter jet acquisition, Scorpène submarine program, and space-based surveillance collaboration.
Industry analysts note that Safran’s decision could lead to a new wave of high-precision component manufacturing and technology transfers into India’s aerospace sector, positioning the country as a major hub in the Indo-Pacific defence ecosystem.
