October 8, 2025 — Jacksonville, FL:
After three decades of developing de-escalation tools for law enforcement, Defense Technology is officially phasing out the traditional 12-gauge shotgun in favor of its next-generation 40LMTS (40mm Less-Lethal Multi-Target System) launcher.
The company announced a nationwide trade-in program allowing agencies to exchange operational 12-gauge shotguns for credit toward the purchase of new 40mm launchers — part of an effort to modernize patrol capabilities and reduce departmental liability.
“The shotgun was a great tool in its day,” said a Defense Technology spokesperson. “But today’s agencies need greater range, accuracy, and flexibility — without compromising safety. The 40LMTS delivers all that, and more.”
The 40LMTS is designed to provide officers with a lightweight, highly adaptable platform capable of delivering blunt-impact munitions from 5 to 120 feet, as well as chemical and diversionary rounds beyond 300 yards. Its simplicity in operation and modular options make it suitable for a wide range of crowd management and tactical deployment scenarios.
Under the special trade-in program, agencies can earn approximately $100 credit per operational 12-gauge shotgun, applicable toward the purchase of the 40mm Launcher 1425 or 1440 variants. Final values are confirmed after inspection, and multiple shotgun credits can be combined for launcher purchases, subject to approval.
Accepted models include the Remington 870/870P, Mossberg 500/590, Ithaca 37/87, and Winchester 1200/1300. NFA-restricted firearms are not eligible.
The initiative is being positioned as a cost-effective modernization path for departments seeking to replace aging 12-gauge inventories while improving officer performance and public safety outcomes.
Agencies interested in participating can contact Defense Technology representatives for inspection scheduling and demonstration events.
