NEW DELHI: The Allahabad High Court has permitted a petition to appoint a court commissioner to inspect the Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. This decision could have an impact on next year’s general elections in India, according to Live Law’s report.

The petitioners are asking for complete ownership of 13.37 acres of land near the temple. They believe it is the birthplace of Hindu god Krishna, according to the news portal Scroll.

After the hearing, Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who represented the petitioners, stated that the court dismissed the arguments of the Shahi Idgah mosque opposing the survey.

“My request was for an advocate commissioner to assess the existence of Hindu temple signs and symbols at the Shahi Idgah masjid,” Jain informed the reporters.

The high court will decide the details of the commissioner’s appointment on December 18.

The suit was filed after the high court had on May 26 transferred to itself all the petitions pending before a Mathura court seeking various reliefs, including removing the mosque that is adjacent to a Krishna temple.

On July 21, a court in Varanasi ordered a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque in the city.

The district court’s verdict came after the high court held in May that a scientific survey could be conducted of an oval-shaped object found on the mosque premises last year during a survey ordered by a Varanasi civil court.
