A three-day national conference on legal services is being organized from 29th June – 1st July 2023 in Srinagar. More than 200 judges from the Supreme Court and High Courts of various states of India will participate in the conference. The conference will be attended by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India D. Y Chandrachud, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal and 200 judges and other eminent persons associated with law and judiciary. In IIOJK, Judiciary should take stock of the prevailing human rights situation including absence of democracy and an elected assembly as a result of free and fair elections and bifurcation of the territory by the BJP-led Modi government in India. Indian government wants to falsely project normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir by holding a three-day national conference on legal services event while the fact is, the territory is facing an emergency-like situation. Judges from Supreme Court and High Courts should internally keep an eye on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The democracy has been wiped out here, there is an emergency-like situation created by the BJP. Kashmiris were denied permission to hold public rallies in the Valley but BJP’s like-minded parties are continuously allowed to do so. It was evident that the government has failed to improve the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention that India’s decision to hold conference is likely to face serve diplomatic fallout for its deceitful intent by holding G-20 summit in IIOJK. Kashmir is a UN recognized disputed territory and India wants to distort reality about the Kashmir’s freedom struggle by holding conference in IIOJK. India’s present-day government which in brazen violation of the UNSC Resolutions, unilaterally and unlawfully abrogated the special status of Kashmir in 2019, has since peddled lies and disinformation to promote its so-called ‘normalcy narrative’ on Kashmir. Indian government has a history of using falsehood as a state policy to achieve its strategic goals. Keeping in view India’s appalling record, Modi government’s decision to hold conference in Kashmir will trigger genuine concerns amongst Kashmiris who fear that the government would yet again use the high-profile meeting as a tool to achieve its strategic objectives.
