Balochistan Health Secretary for expanding the reach of nutrition programme

QUETTA: In Balochistan, the provincial health department has completed its work to expand Nutrition Project for Mothers and Children to twenty-four more districts of the province.

Provincial Health Secretary Muhammad Nasar said the expansion of the project to the new districts is awaiting the provincial cabinet’s approval.

He said the project marked significant achievements in seven districts of the province, where its first phase was launched.

Saleh Nasar said this programme helped curtail mortality rate in Dera Bugti, Khulo, Punjgor, Killa Saifullah, Lasbila, Noshki and Kharan.

He said as a result of careful measures taken by the health department under this programme, malnutrition ratio of under five years of age children has reduced by thirty percent in the last two years.

The Secretary said ten percent reduction in anemia has also been achieved.

Balochistan in mourning after Mastung suicide blast martyrs 128, including Raisani

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has announced two-day mourning in the province after a suicide blast at a political rally in Mastung martyred 128 people and injured more than 150, in one of the deadliest attacks in the country´s history.

Among the martyred was Nawabzada Siraj Raisani, who was running for a provincial seat with the newly-formed local Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).

Authorities said the suicide bomber detonated in the middle of a compound where the political meeting was taking place, in Mastung’s Darengarh area. The blast was the latest in a string of attacks that have spurred fears of violence ahead of the general election on July 25, and came hours after four people were killed and 39 injured in a bomb blast targetting a JUI-F convoy in Bannu on Friday.

The national flag will be flown at half-mast at all public buildings in the province. The BAP has also cancelled its election rally in Quetta today in memory of the deceased.

The Pakistan Bar Council has announced two-day mourning and is boycotting all court proceedings today in condemnation of the tragedy.

Funeral prayers for Siraj Raisani will be offered at 3pm in the provincial capital today. He will be laid to rest in Kanak, Mastung.

Levies personnel said on Saturday that evidence is being collected from the site of the attack, which has been secured by the forensics team. A case would be registered against the attack once all necessary proceedings have been conducted, officials added.

The Mastung attack was the most lethal since Taliban militants assaulted Peshawar’s Army Public School in 2014, killing over 150 people, mostly children, and one of the deadliest in the country´s long struggle with terrorism.

On Tuesday, a bomb targeted a rally by the Awami National Party (ANP) in Peshawar, martyring local ANP leader Haroon Bilour along with 21 others. Thousands flocked to his funeral the next day.

The military has warned of security threats in the run-up to the election on July 25, and said it will deploy more than 370,000 soldiers on polling day.

The fresh spate of violence was strongly condemned by political leaders and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who expressed sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and vowed that attempts of inimical forces to derail important democratic activity shall not succeed.

Quetta attack: Footage shows terrorists trying to enter church before being shot dead

QUETTA: CCTV footage of Quetta’s terrorist attack shows the gatekeeper and security personnel at Bethel Memorial Church putting up immense resistance to the terrorists at the church’s entrance.

In the footage, it could be seen two suicide bombers were trying to storm the church and the gateman was barring their entry into the premises.

In second footage of the incident emerged lately, one of the suicide bombers could be seen jumping over walls of the church premises and opening gate for his accomplice.

Springing into action, a security guard shot one of the bombers on the premises.

Talking to media on Sunday, Balochistan Inspector General (IG) Moazzam Ansari said there were around 400 people present in the church at the time of the attack but a tragedy was thwarted owing to a timely action by security personnel.

“The quick response by security personnel prevented a major tragedy,” he told media persons while briefing about the incident.

According to officials, DNA samples of the slain terrorists have been obtained for identifications. An FIR of the incident has also been registered against unidentified terrorists.

Zehri announces compensation for church attack victims

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri on Monday announced a compensation amount for the victims of a terrorist attack on a church located on Quetta’s Zarghoon Road.

Speaking to the media, he said that a compensation of Rs1 million each will be given to the families of those killed in the tragic incident while Rs0.5 million each to the injured.

The CM said his government is determined to take the fight against terrorism to its logical conclusion and that militants could not weaken the resolve of the people.

Four-day thrilling Jhal Magsi Desert Rally 2017 comes to end

KARACHI: A four-day motorsports event titled‘Lifebuoy Jhal Magsi Desert Rally 2017’came to an end on Sunday with a participation of drivers from various parts of Pakistan.

The thrilling motorsports event at Balochistan’s Jhal Magsi district was held under the aegis of ARY Digital Network. The event was attended by a number of national dignitaries and officials of the local administration.

The final track of around 200 kilometers long, was tightly contested between 24 drivers. However, king of desert race Nadir Magsi clinched the trophy in the final round after leaving his competitors behind in the desert race.

The event began on December 14, which concluded on Dec 17.

Personnel of Pakistan Rangers and Balochistan Levies were deployed to ensure the security of the event, besides all other necessary arrangements including paramedical staff and tow trucks w, re also placed along the 200-metres long track race.

The winner Nadir Magsi said it was the toughest track, which he said, was extremely difficult to finish.

The event, under the theme‘gear up for the rush’, was organised to provide entertainment to thousands of sports enthusiasts gathered for the event, coming to an end on Sunday.
