Police on Saturday raided a marriage ceremony in Pind Mehri village near Hassanabdal, foiling a bid to marry off a 13 years old girl to a 53 year-old man.According to NNP exclusive investigation report.
“The police had been tipped off that a minor was being married in the Pind Mehri village in limits of Hassanabdal Police station following which he immediately directed police officials to conduct a raid,” Said Sub divisional Police officer DSP Haji Mohammad Shafeeq told NNP.
He said that Mohammad Arif- a native of Mardan is performing marriage ceremony of his 13 years old Kiynat Bibi with 53 years old Akhter Nawaz due to poverty in Pind Mehri village. He said that a Police team raided at the ceremony site and taken in to custody Mohammad Arif and would-be groom Akhter Nawaz and registered a case against the accused
He said that haunt has launched to arrest nikah khawan (officiator of the marriage) identified as Molvi Mohammad Ismaeel who went underground after Police raided as he already solemnized the marriage before police raided.
DSP Haji Mohammad Shafeeq has said that a First Information Report was registered under the Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2013 against Mohammad Arif, the girl’s father, the groom and would-be groom Akhter Nawaz on behalf of the state. Police official told Dawn that all the accused would be produced in court on Monday.
Child marriage is a punishable offence. According to the Child Marriages Restraint Act, a child marriage includes any marriage where one of the contracting parties is less than 18 years of age. Those found guilty of entering into, or facilitating, a child marriage can be sentenced to rigorous punishment for up to three years. Haji Shafeeq has said NNP that the child was rescued by the police and shifted to a Dar Ul Aman in Attock. She will be presented to a special court on Monday.
